Young Actress Diana Silvers on the Cusp of Stardom with ‘Ma’

After making her acting debut in M. Night Shyamalan’s No.1 box-office hit Glass opposite James McAvoy and Bruce Willis, teen actress Diana Silvers stars in Universal Pictures’ new suspense thriller Ma (in Philippine cinemas July 10).

From Blumhouse Productions—the company that has produced such smash hits as Get Out, Split, Glass, Halloween and The Purge franchise — Ma tells the unnerving tale of a mysterious, lonely woman named Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer) who seems harmless at first. Friendly but stern, she offers safe harbor to a group of high-school friends looking to party. But Sue Ann is a woman tormented by demons and trauma from her past, and, unbeknownst to her teen guests, she has a more sinister agenda than anyone suspects.

Silvers plays 15-year-old, Maggie, one of the high-school students befriended by Sue Ann. Maggie has been forced to move to her mom’s Ohio hometown from California because of her parents’ separation. She has a good relationship with her mom, Erica (Juliette Lewis), but like all teenagers, she keeps things from her. Feeling like a stranger in a strange town, Maggie is eager to make friends at her new school and not rock the social boat, so when Haley (McKaley Miller) and the rest of the gang—including Andy (Corey Fogelmanis), who soon becomes Maggie’s boyfriend—task Maggie with stopping Sue Ann outside the liquor store to ask her to buy them alcohol, Maggie complies.

But Maggie’s a bit savvier than her cohorts, and she begins to suspect that something is wrong with Sue Ann long before the rest of her friends do. “Maggie is your typical 15-year-old girl who is trying to find her place in her new school,” Silvers says. “I see her as the moral police; she just wants to do the right thing. It’s interesting to see Maggie evolve throughout the film. She must learn to grow into her own and take charge of her life.”

As Sue Ann’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and frightening, Maggie will be forced to be brave, in ways she never expected, to save her new friends and herself. “Maggie is living the life Sue Ann always wanted,” Silvers says. “So, Sue Ann hates her, yet is also obsessed with her.”

Roles for teenagers rarely require the kind of broad range and complexity needed for the part of Maggie, but the cast and filmmakers were wowed by Silvers’ abilities and presence.

Spencer believes Silvers is a star in the making. “Diana is a beautiful breath of fresh air and a great discovery,” Spencer says. “She has the same type of freshness that reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. You want to root for her the minute you see her as Maggie.” Spencer advocated for casting Silvers, despite her relative lack of experience. “It was easy to fight for her to get this role,” Spencer says. “Although she doesn’t have a long resume, she has a lot of talent.”

For Silvers, working with Spencer exceeded even her sky-high expectations. “It was so lovely to work with an actress as brilliant as Octavia,” Silvers says. “She was so welcoming, and she fought for me during my audition process. The way Octavia prepares for her emotional scenes was fun to watch from afar. The way she can turn her acting on and off was amazing. I felt like I was in a school of sorts, learning and absorbing so much from her every day.”

About Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw

After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw.

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Fast & Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) from a script by longtime Fast & Furious narrative architect Chris Morgan, the film is produced by Morgan, Johnson, Statham and Hiram Garcia. The executive producers are Dany Garcia, Kelly McCormick, Steven Chasman, Ethan Smith and Ainsley Davies.

The Benefits of Online Vs. Classroom Learning

$

Today, many people find that investing in higher education is essential for them to reach their career goals. Studying at college or university allows you to significantly improve your career prospects by gaining a new qualification and improving your skill-set. However, attending university can be a very expensive commitment that can cause a lot of disruption to your lifestyle, particularly if you want to continue working full-time while studying, or have family commitments to attend to. The good news is that there are several flexible alternative options to choose from today. Could online learning be a better alternative for you? Here are some of the main benefits of online vs. classroom learning.

Increased Flexibility:

One of the main reasons why more and more students are signing up to online programs such as this online health administration degree is the extra level of flexibility that these courses provide to them. Parents who would usually find studying at university difficult to commit to due to their existing family commitments often find it much easier to fit online learning around their busy lives, since they can study from home without the inconvenience of needing to attend classes on campus. In addition, studying online gives you more flexibility if you want to work full-time as you study, or even if you wanted to travel and see more of the world with your time – you can just take your studies with you.

Access Quality Tuition:

It’s not uncommon for prospective students to be wary of opting for online learning; you may be unsure about the standard of tuition that you are going to receive. However, online study has come on in leaps and bounds since it was first introduced over a decade ago and today; you can find degree programs from reputable universities with a standard of tuition that meets, if not exceeds what you would expect as a traditional campus-based student.

Save Money:

Another main benefit of opting to study online is that it’s one of the best ways to earn a college degree without having a massive price tag to worry about. The cost of higher education is currently at an all-time high around the world, so studying online gives students on a budget a viable option for achieving their academic goals at a fraction of the traditional price. While some online degree programs do not offer too much in terms of savings on tuition, you can find others that are priced at around one third cheaper. Additionally, online students will also be able to save significant amounts of money on the associated costs of studying – there’s no need to relocate to somewhere closer to the university, commuting costs will be very low if not non-existent, and most learning resources are freely available online for the majority of online programs.

Finally, many students find learning online extremely beneficial as it’s easier for them to learn in a way that suits them best, whether that means studying at the evenings or on the weekends, tweaking their studies to suit their individual learning style, or going at a pace that suits them best.

Teaching English as a Second Language – What You Need to Know

$
0
0

English isn’t the most widely spoken language in the world – Mandarin Chinese takes the top spot – but it comes in at a close second. Wherever you go, someone will speak English, therefore, it is the best language to study if you want to teach overseas. However, it can be a tricky task teaching English to pupils who don’t have any English skills whatsoever. If you think it’s a good career opportunity, here are some useful tips.

Gain a Qualification

It is always better to have a qualification in your pocket if you want to teach English to foreign students. This makes it easier to find a suitable position overseas. In addition, you can also teach English over the internet, which is a useful side income when working in a full-time job.

There are several qualifications you can earn. A TEFL certificate is the standard qualification, and this will give you access to numerous positions around the world. Be aware that you’ll need to have a bachelor’s degree before you can take your TEFL certification. The other option is to study for an M.Ed. in English as a Second Language. You can do this in your own time via an online college such as Merrimack College.

Develop a Suitable Teaching Style for Your Students

Teaching isn’t easy. It takes a great deal of patience and you can expect to experience a fair amount of frustration. The hardest part of teaching English as a second language is that you probably won’t be fluent in your students’ language. Therefore, it won’t be easy communicating with them.

Initially, your goal is to teach your students some basic vocabulary that they can build upon. One way to do this is via visual materials. Prepare picture cards of simple items, so your students can match words and pictures.

Once students have a basic vocabulary that includes food, drink, animals, places, etc., you can begin to work on tenses: past, present, and future.

Make use of technology, but don’t ignore the basics like flash cards and pictorial displays for the walls.

Teach at the Right Age Level

Your students could be anywhere in age from elementary level to mature students. Pitch your teaching style to suit their age. Make it fun for younger children and keep lessons relatively simple. Use things they can relate to, such as their favorite characters from movies and books.

Older kids need more of a challenge, but don’t make your lessons too dry and boring, or they will switch off and not learn anything.

Break up lessons into smaller chunks so students have time to assimilate new information. Test their language skills weekly, in a fun and non-stressful way. This lets you gauge how well they are picking up the new language, so you can pay extra attention to areas where students are finding it more difficult.

Lastly, pay close attention to the cultural differences in whatever country you are teaching. This will help up you form a better relationship with your TEFL students. After all, they need to be comfortable with you if they are to learn!

The Mystery in Asia’s First Demonic Possession in the film ‘Clarita’

The film is inspired by the real-life story of Clarita Villanueva, whose name was all over the news in the 1950s because of the claims that she had experienced a demonic possession

It was in 1953 when the name Clarita Villanueva has been the talk of the town because of an unusual headline—demonic possession. In different accounts, it was claimed that she was possessed by demonic spirits while she was in jail.

The story of 17-year-old Clarita Villanueva—the first reported demonic possession in Asia–is the inspiration behind Black Sheep’s latest movie offering, “Clarita”, which locally has a total gross of over Php 70-million as of June 27.

The film “Clarita” is inspired by the mystery behind the story on what occurred during Clarita’s (Jodi Sta. Maria) demonic possession and exorcism, where her faith and those of the people who tried to help her were tested because of the obstacles they had to overcome.

The film’s director Derick Cabrido studied the records of Villanueva’s case and found out that she was from the province and went to Manila to look for her father. She was then jailed, and although it was suspected that the possessions started even before that time, it became more haunting when she was already behind bars.

Aside from describing the film “Clarita” as “whiff of fresh air in the horror genre”, Pablo Tariman from Philippine broadsheet The Philippine Star also praised Cabrido’s direction. “Derrick Cabrido made a haunting tale that is several notches higher from what we see in horror films today,” he said in his movie review.

Meantime, this is Jodi’s first foray to this genre, which she admitted really pushed her to her limits, especially since she chose to do all her scenes without a stunt double. “It was not easy, the process in making the film was not easy. But seeing the finished product, we can say it was rewarding,” said Jodi about making the film.

Also part of the film are Ricky Davao, Nonie Buencamino, Romnick Sarmenta, Arron Villaflor, and Alyssa Muhlach.

Overall, according to the movie review by Julia Alende published on the entertainment portal pep.ph, “Clarita” is “proof that Filipino horror can achieve greater heights and can be both grotesque but sophisticated at the same time.”

Can Clarita’s soul still be saved or will evil take over it? Uncover the mystery as “Clarita” screens in the following regions on these dates: starting on July 4 in the Middle East; July 14 in Paris, France; starting July 26 in the U.S.; July 28 in Dublin, Ireland; and August 4 in Oslo, Norway.

But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

The music score is composed by The Newton Brothers (“The Haunting of Hill House”).

ABS-CBN’s new documentary “Radical Love,” which earned praises from netizens for its raw and sensitive depiction of actress Cherry Pie Picache’s story of tragedy and forgiveness, is now streaming on iWant.

The documentary, which trended on Twitter when it premiered on ABS-CBN Sunday’s Best last July 7, revisits the 2014 murder of Cherry Pie’s mother Zenaida Sison, who was found lifeless with multiple stab wounds inside her home.

After years of grieving and with the desire to truly heal, Cherry Pie was guided by her faith into making peace with her mom’s assailant this year, and their meeting was shown in “Radical Love.” This ABS-CBN DocuCentral documentary will also air on DZMM TeleRadyo on July 14 at 7 pm and on ANC on July 15 at 7 pm.

Viewers went to Twitter to discuss and laud Cherry Pie’s decision to forgive the person responsible for the death of the person she loved the most. They also commended the way the documentary team handled such a delicate topic.

“Just saw the documentary RADICAL LOVE in iWant. @Yescppicache finds the greatness of heart and the guidance of the Almighty to forgive the man who murdered her mother. This had me realizing the power of forgiveness. Watch it. #RadicalLove,” said film director, producer and producer Joey Javier Reyes.

Another Twitter user, Mond Sikawat, praised the team behind “Radical Love” for the way the documentary did justice to Cherry Pie’s experience.

“ABS-CBN’s #RadicalLove has a very good storytelling treatment. Those video supports na akala ko re-enactment which I initially thought na off ay later on revealed na BTS pala. Nice! Very raw din. Congrats, DocuCentral Team,” he said.

In a special screening of “Radical Love” held in ABS-CBN’s Dolphy Theater last week, Cherry Pie said she was initially hesitant to share her story, but hopes her experience can help others going through a similar situation.

“I hope we are all reminded of compassion, unconditional love, and forgiveness truly is. I hope we are all reminded to value and respect life in all forms. I dedicate this to my family and to all families of victims of violent crime,” she said.

Viewers may still catch “Radical Love,” produced by ABS-CBN News’ award-winning documentary team DocuCentral, online via iWant.ph or the iWant App. It will also be aired on DZMM TeleRadyo on ABS-CBN TVplus this July 14 at 7 pm, on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel on cable on July 15 at 7 pm. In the third season, Gilead’s people begin to hope for a revolution.
