Why iWant’s ‘Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 3’ is a Sneakily Somber Commentary on Fake News and Historical Revisionism

The iWant original series “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 3,” the latest in the iconic “Septic” trilogy, is a seven-part mockumentary series that does more than make audiences laugh. While its first and second installments satirized the indie film industry and the predictability of romantic-comedy tropes, the third makes a statement and show uncanny and haunting similarities to the world’s current socio-political climate.

Having “conquered” the world of acting, Eugene Domingo’s character attempts to push her boundaries as an artist by directing, starring in, and producing her own film about Josephine Bracken–famously known as national hero Jose Rizal’s mysterious lover. Direk Euge’s journey in producing “The Real Untold Story of Josephine Bracken” is a comedic one that ultimately ends in disaster, but what stands out more than her ridiculous persona is the character’s allusion to the role people play in producing fake news and revising history.

“Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 3” has struck both a comedic yet serious chord among iWant users. Here are some scenes that show how the third installment makes the audience laugh out loud, think, and question the “truth” around them all at once. (Spoilers ahead!)

  1. This initial scene of introspection, where Direk Euge explains why she is so insistent on pursuing the creation of a historical film about Jose Rizal.

 First of all, same.

Second of all, Direk Euge’s sole focus on furthering her career as an artist makes viewers question her true intentions: Are they pure? Does she truly want to do Philippine history justice, or is her upcoming film ultimately self-serving?

2.This casting mishap:

It is here where viewers witness Direk Euge twist history for the first time: by casting herself, a Filipina, to play Josephine Bracken, an Irish-Chinese mestiza woman. The series makes the clever move of contrasting Filipino historian Ambeth Ocampo’s accurate snippets of history with her insistence that she play Josephine Bracken, making her distortions of history even more obvious. Girl, we see you.

3. Direk Euge’s casting mishap part two: Jose Rizal

Jose Rizal: writer, patriot — and thirst-trapping national hero?

Rather than casting Lao Rodriguez, an actor who has studied the ins and outs of Rizal’s persona, Uge goes with Tony Labrusca to play the role. Hooked by his shiny white teeth and muscular body, Direk Euge casts him because of her attraction to him. At this point, we can already can tell that historical accuracy is barely a priority.

4. Just a pop of color

Direk Euge demands that the cast’s costumes be composed of muted earth tones, while she stands out donning a cardinal pink dress, using her power as the film’s director and producer in order to make sure that the spotlight is on her.

5. When Jose Met Josephine: Wood-chopping hunk meets Irish beauty

Supposedly portraying what is supposed to be a low-key first meeting between Jose Rizal and his future paramour, Direk Euge insists that their meeting be a hotbed of meaningful glances and sexual tension. At this point in the series, we do not only get used to Uge’s distortions of history, but expect it. No longer is “The Real Untold Story of Josephine Bracken” a historical biopic; it’s a romantic film about the new-and-improved Jose Rizal and his demure lover.

6. When Direk Euge goes overboard with the waterworks

Are we filming a historical biopic or a melodramatic soap opera? In a scene where Rizal suspects Josephine of being a spy, Eugene refuses to hold back the hysterics. We are quick to perceive that her real intention is not to provide justice to Rizal and Bracken’s history, but to show off her acting skills.

Meanwhile, Sir Joey or Jose Javier Reyes, Direk Euge’s screenwriter, says out loud what we’re all thinking:

7. When Direk Euge rewrites the script to make room for an unnecessary  confrontation scene

Direk Euge’s deliberate distortions of history done for her own benefit become increasingly obvious when she insists on a confrontation scene between Josephine and Saturnina, one of Rizal’s sisters. Despite Direk Joey’s disapproval (“It never happened!!!”) and Ambeth Ocampo’s assertion that it never took place, Direk Euge proceeds to write the scene anyway.

8. When things get (way too) up close and personal

Direk Euge is deeply dissatisfied with the initial editing of the film, complaining that the “mood” is simply off. But is it really what she is so upset about, or the lack of her–I mean, Josephine’s–close-ups?

9. When the focus group discussion about the biopic becomes too real

Here we have discerning consumers of media who say out loud what is obvious: the biopic is an abuse of creative license.

And that… is the tea.

10.When Direk Euge finally gets what she deserves for distorting history

The series’ message is crystal clear in its chilling final scene. Uge’s audience members–a mix of flabbergasted film critics and livid Rizalistas–express their anger toward’s Direk Euge’s dramatic alteration of Rizal and Bracken’s history. No longer is “Ang Babae Sa Septic 3” funny; audiences now perceive how painfully close to home it is – we are indeed living in a dangerous time of fake news, historical revisionism, and people abusing their power for their own benefit.

Go off, sis!

Spotlight on Isabela Moner: the Star of ‘Dora and The Lost City of Gold’

$

Teenage actress Isabela Moner was a shoo-in for the titular role in Paramount Pictures’ Dora and the Lost City of Gold from the moment director James Bobin met her.

Her work in the films Instant Family, Transformers: The Last Knight and Sicario: Day of the Soldado had already established her as a rising star in Hollywood, with both the emotional and physical skills needed for the role. “I saw a lot of people, as you can imagine,” he says. “But Isabela was just so fantastic. There was never a question in my mind. She has an intensity that makes Dora’s action scenes riveting, but she’s also got incredible heart. Isabela is the engine driving the whole film.”

Watch the film’s new spot below:

Based on the popular Nick Jr. animated series Dora the Explorer, the live-action adaptation comes from director James Bobin (The Muppets).

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever – High School. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.

Moner came to the project with a notion of who Dora would be as a teen, but says the screenplay provided a very clear road map for the character. “She’s not a kid and she’s not an adult. She’s funnier, more candid and a little bit more chill. I do break the fourth wall, but in a clever way, like I’m talking to a GoPro.”

Drastically different from everyone she meets at a time in life when it’s important to fit in, the young woman quickly learns that the best piece of advice her parents imparted is the simplest: Just be yourself. Dora wouldn’t fit in with her suburban classmates even if she knew how. She brings her deep knowledge of animals, plants, seasons and cultures with her and continues to study the world around her — even referring to the students at her high school as “indigenous people.”

“She doesn’t know how to fake being another person,” explains Moner. “In this world where it seems like everyone’s just living for Instagram, Dora actually does know who she is. I think it’s a great lesson for anyone — and for people my age specifically, who are just figuring out what they have to offer the world.”

Bobin was the perfect director for this project, she says, not only because he knew the character well though his children, but also because he has an innate ability to think like a child. “I think it’s because he truly treasures childhood,” Moner says. “He loves the pure joy and the innocence of it, and that shows in the script and the film.”

Only 17 when the film was shot, Moner was a model of professionalism, according to her cast mates. “I can’t believe she is so young,” says co-star Adriana Barraza, who plays Abuela Valerie, Dora’s doting grandma. “She’s so mature, with a beautiful soul. She is able to communicate everything at first sight. She is Dora!”

Moner’s mother is Peruvian and she herself is fluent in both English and Spanish, with close ties to her Latina roots. “There is no better time for this movie to happen,” says the young actress. “I was so honored to be part of this adventure. It’s a statement to have a movie like this be part of American mainstream culture. It will make many kids and adults proud of their heritage.”

In Philippine cinemas August 14, Dora and the Lost City of Gold is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures. ‘Crawl’ Thrills US Critics, Opens Today in PH Cinemas

American critics describe it as “An action-packed creature feature that’s a fun throw-back, fast, terrifying!”

Indeed, Paramount Pictures’ Crawl is the nail-biting horror thriller that has captivated US audiences this summer, garnering 83% Certified Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Filipino horror fans get to experience the suspense in the big screen when Crawl opens in local cinemas this August 7th.

Watch the film’s new spot below:

Crawl is directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and produced by Sam Raimi (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) and Craig Flores (300).

In the film, when a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears.

Film critic David Fear of Rolling Stone writes of Crawl, “Like the apex predators slithering at the center of it all, it gets the job done once it lets is more brutal, primal instincts take over.”

Reviewer Angelica Jade Bastien of Vulture agrees that “Crawl is a great example of a simple story exceedingly well-told. It’s a bloody adventure full of teeth-gnawing turns of fortune, mordant wit, vicious gator kills, and surprising tenderness.”

“Its sensibilities are schlocky, but its execution is immaculate, thanks to precise pacing, a deft command of tension, and cinematography that showcases the carnage from every possible angle,” writes Laura Bradley of Vanity Fair.

Finally, Sandy Schaefer of Screen Rant rejoices that “director Alexandre Aja is back to doing what he does best – lean, bloody, stylish B-movie fare – with Crawl. The film plays to Aja’s strengths in creating white-knuckle tension and offers a much more stripped-down thrill ride compared to other releases this summer. It even has a surprisingly uplifting message. Thanks to Aja’s confident direction and Kaya Scodelario’s warrior performance, Crawl makes for a terse and otherwise exhilarating viewing experience.

Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’ Arrives in PH this August

Quentin Tarantino, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt on the set of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.

They play the heroes, but reality has caught up with them. Watch the final international trailer of Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, the 9th film by Quentin Tarantino and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. The film opens in Philippine cinemas August 28.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.

Written and Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is produced by David Heyman, Shannon McIntosh and Quentin Tarantino.

With Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino continues to evolve and to surprise audiences. While the movie has all of the hallmarks of a Tarantino film – a wholly original story, with fresh characters, presented with bravura technique – his ninth film also breaks new ground for the writer-director. It is a character-driven story, dealing with mature issues of unfulfilled expectations that inevitably confront us all as we age. In Hollywood, this struggle is particularly dramatic, as success and failure live side by side. In Once Upon a Time…, they do so literally as well as figuratively. Uniting two of today’s greatest stars in a first-ever pairing and recreating an entire lost era, the film is big cinema made for the big screen. A true original in a landscape of sequels and superheroes.

Set in 1969, Tarantino recreates the time and place of his formative years, when everything – the United States, the city of Los Angeles, the Hollywood star system, even the movies themselves – was at an inflection point, and no one knew where the pieces would land. All this is not entirely dissimilar from the changes buffeting Hollywood today.

“This is a unique film in Quentin’s body of work, and it is his most emotional,” says producer David Heyman. “In a way, he’s looking back on his influences and the movies he loved, the period he was growing up in, and what helped shape him – a love letter to a bygone Hollywood. But I found the script so moving. Yes, it was funny. Yes, it was thrilling. Still, at its heart, it’s a really tender story about a friendship.”

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio star in ONCE UOPN A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.

ABS-CBN’s footprint expansion in the international market continues to gain strength as two of its hit primetime teleseryes— “The General’s Daughter” and “Ngayon at Kailanman”—have been acquired by Sky Net International Drama Channel for airing in Myanmar.

“The General’s Daughter” premiered on August 4 and airs during primetime (Friday to Sunday, 7 PM), while “Ngayon at Kailanman” started airing on Sky Net last June 24. Both shows are subtitled in Burmese on Sky Net International Drama Channel.

The Kapamilya network’s successful deal with Sky Net solidifies ABS-CBN’s reputation as a trusted producer of exceptional content for international audiences. “The General’s Daughter” and “Ngayon at Kailanman’s” presence in Myanmar follows the success of other narrative buys from ABS-CBN this 2019, including “The Blood Sisters” in Kazakhstan, “Pangako Sa’Yo” in the Dominican Republic, “Halik” in Tanzania, and ABS-CBN’s co-production with Limon Yapim of “Hanggang Saan” in Turkey.

ABS-CBN’s content, popular for its heartfelt Filipino stories, are available across other territories through ABS-CBN International Distribution, recognized in the global arena as a reliable foreign content provider. It has been a premier source of high quality Filipino programming in over 50 territories all over the world and has sold over 50,000 hours of content worldwide.
