She was also sent to a mental institution in Bataan two years ago for two months but it still did not work out. Nenita is now 43 and her three children have never felt their mother’s love for 18 years while she was thrown to the mountains for a second time by her parents.

TFC’s Subtitling of Shows in English Praised by Subscribers

The recent bold move of ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC) to subtitle most of its popular programs in English for viewing worldwide was met with pleasant surprise by many who welcomed the new free feature of their TFC subscriptions.

Subtitling of shows

“As I emphasized before, this TFC initiative is an investment in the overseas Filipino family who we have pledged to serve,” said ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez. “I am most heartened by the fact and reality that overseas Filipinos are now gathering around the television as a family again, watching, understanding and enjoying TFC’s Filipino shows. We have transcended the barriers of language and made Filipino content accessible to the the English-speaking world.”

Below are what some subscribers are saying about TFC’s new initiative:

“My husband, Mark, is very happy and excited that TFC has subtitles. Now he can understand the language better and the FILIPINO culture. He also mentioned that he is more interested in watching TFC because he learns new words everyday and can relate in the conversations. He now has the ability to talk more in depth about the programs that he is viewing.” – Joji Reyes Ortega-Babuschack, Human Resources Personelist, Department of the Navy and Producer, JB Entertainment Productions, LCC, Toms River, New Jersey

“For me personally, I like it, it makes me more engaged in watching TFC. My kids, though they are focused on their school work and social media, are beginning to watch and understand. Before, TFC turns on when I get home and when I watch, they hear the TV but they’re still on their homework and social media. But every time we watch a Filipino movie in the theater, subtitles keep them focused and more appreciative of the movie. Now at home, my daughter Ellie watches ‘Oh My G’ with subtitles. She appreciates having the subtitles as she understands what’s going on.” – Ledy Almadin, President-elect, PAFCOM and Manager, EisnerAmper LLP, Jersey City, NJ

“My whole family has a great experience with the subtitles on TFC! The kids, especially, can relate and understand the shows more. I’m so happy to see my granddaughters, Nyelle Sarreal and Jeannaliz Weber, learning to watch Filipino programs!” – Marlet Cassidy, elementary school teacher, North Bergen, NJ

“My husband, Marck, loves languages. Being a musician, he has a good ear for how words are pronounced. But what helps him most when learning a language is knowing how words are spelled. Before, every time he gets a chance to sit in front of the TV to catch TFC, he would say, ‘I wish they spoke slowly.’ So, when one day he saw that TFC has subtitles, he was just overjoyed. ‘Oh… so ngayon is spelled -nga!’ he exclaimed. As for me, I just want to say, ‘Good job TFC!’ You don’t just provide entertainment for Filipinos here in the US, you’ve just widened your audience!” – Mildred Smith, Seafood City Marketing Communications Strategist, Los Angeles, California

“During the past few months, our family is able to ‘bond’ with each other by watching some TFC teleseryes while having dinner. My two sons, Brian (15) and Joshua (13) are able to understand our Tagalog language but is not able to speak the language, except for short conversational phrases like, Kamusta po? and Salamat po.

“Quite recently, while watching the teleserye, ‘Oh my G!’, Brian suddenly remarked, ‘Looks like the English subtitles are not the exact translation of the conversation.’ My husband and I were a bit surprised with his comment. We know that he can understand what he hears from the teleserye but we were not conscious that he was also paying attention to the subtitles. Anyway, his next comment was, ‘What does naku mean?’ My husband and I looked at each other in amazement and then I replied, ‘I don’t think there is a direct translation for the word, naku, as this is an expression.’ I further pointed out that it appears that the subtitles are written based on the intended meaning of the conversation. This is an ongoing wonderful bonding and learning experience.” – Olive Clavio, President, GTI Corporation dba GTI Telecom, Los Angeles, California

‘Insurgent’– Global Book Phenomenon Translates to Screens on March 18 in PH

Based on the novel “Insurgent” by Veronica Roth, The Divergent Series: Insurgent picks up three days after the end of Divergent, when Tris and Four narrowly hindered Jeanine’s plot to use mind-controlled Dauntless troops to exterminate the population of Abnegation.

Insurgent2

But the victory comes at a terrible personal cost for Tris. Both her parents are killed in the battle, as is her fellow Dauntless initiate Will, whom she is forced to shoot when he attacks her under the influence of a brain-altering serum.

Golden Globe Award®-nominee Shailene Woodley reprises her role as Tris in “Insurgent” where she and Four (Theo James) find themselves on the run from Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the power-hungry leader of the Erudite faction. As the traitorous Dauntless troops under Jeanine’s command prowl the ruins of dystopian Chicago rounding up Divergents, Tris and Four traverse the city hoping to find allies among the Amity, Candor, Abnegation and Dauntless factions—as well as the rebellious and impoverished mass of Factionless.

“The book release of Insurgent was when the Divergent series truly took off and became a publishing phenomenon. Veronica wrote a roller coaster of a book with incredible twists and turns that really captured the imagination of fans, who spread the word like wildfire,” says producer Pouya Shahbazian. “In Insurgent the city is in upheaval and new secrets are coming to light. While in the first movie, Jeanine pinpoints the Divergents as being a problem she wants to eliminate, in this movie, we learn very quickly that Jeanine is determined to capture them and use them to discover a powerful secret to which only they hold the key..”

According to Roth, writing Insurgent allowed her to flesh out Tris’ world in a way she wasn’t able to do in Divergent, partially because the first book was written in the first person. “It’s a little bit like growing up,” the author says. “When you’re a child, the world is very small, and when we get older, we realize how large the world really is. Insurgent is the world getting a little bit bigger and Tris is experiencing that in a very literal way … first it’s one faction, then it’s two factions, then it’s the entire city of Chicago.”

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent is a high-octane action-adventure packed with excitement and suspense,” says Erik Feig, Co-President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, who also played an instrumental role in the development and production of blockbuster book-based franchises “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga.” “It combines a riveting plot, an extraordinary cast and a lot of heart with intense stunt work and visual effects to deliver an extremely satisfying and unique movie-going experience.”

Insurgent 2

Although the filmmakers made every effort to stay true to the themes and characters of the books, Roth understood that some changes needed to be made to present the 544-page novel in a two-hour movie. “In the book, there’s more freedom to do a weird structure and explain things slowly. But on screen, it has to be fast and concise and clear. I’m always really open-minded to change as long as it creates a better and stronger story. One thing that was very important to me was to ensure that the dynamic between Tris and Four remained the same, and that she is still the primary mover of the plot. And in Insurgent, it is still Tris’ story.”

“Insurgent” opens in cinemas on March 18 from Pioneer Films.

‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ Hits US Cinemas this March 27

The Cinema One Originals film “That Thing Called Tadhana” continues to soar. After a successful nationwide release last month and positive responses from critics and film viewers, the Angelica Panganiban-JM de Guzman starrer is heading to US theaters starting this March 27 (Friday).

Angelica JM

The phenomenal blockbuster hit, which amassed a staggering 134 million pesos last month, has been named the highest grossing indie film of all time, with screenings always sold out nationwide. Director Antoinette Jadaone’s romantic-comedy film has also harvested numerous awards, including the Audience Choice and Best Actress awards at the 2014 Cinema One Originals Film Festival, as well as the Best Actor award at the Gawad Pasado.

“That Thing Called Tadhana” has also been selected in various international film festivals. Jadaone’s film will compete at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2015 and will be part of the Los Angeles Asian Film FeStival, and at the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Angelica is elated on the film’s continued success. She recently shared her excitement about the film’s slated screenings abroad at the film’s victory party.

“I am very excited because our Kapamilya abroad will have the chance to watch the film. I hope that ‘Tadhana’ will experience the same success abroad as it did here in the country,” Angelica Panganiban said.

On winning best actress in awards shows, Angelica said the experience is humbling.

“Just being nominated together with ate Guy (Nora Aunor), ate Vi (Vilma Santos), Sharon Cuneta, is such an honor. I felt that the nomination itself was already a win because my name was in the same category with them,” she added.

Meanwhile, JM de Guzman, who recently won his first best actor award for the film, said he is grateful to be given the part of Anthony.

“I am very thankful that the role of Anthony was given to me. From the very start, I have believed in the script and the people behind the film because ‘Tadhana’ has a very compelling story, but I did not expect that it would be such a big hit. Everything is happening so fast. I mean, we already have an international screening and we’re taking part in international film festivals. It’s so surreal,” JM shared.

JM also reacted on how ‘Tadhana’ served as his big comeback to showbiz with a big charming smile.

“I just laughed a lot when people say that ‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ catapulted me to matinee idol status. I did leading man roles before, but becoming a matinee idol didn’t occur to me. Thinking about it just makes me laugh,” JM said.

JM is also pleased about “Tadhana’s” international screenings because it will generate more awareness about indie filmmakers, actors, and producers.

Aside from international screenings, “That Thing Called Tadhana” will have an outdoor screening at Cinema One’s Boracay summer event on March 28 (Saturday) and director Antoinette Jadaone’s breakthrough film will also have a book adaptation.

ABS-CBN presents its newest powerhouse drama offering this 2015 via upcoming primetime TV series “Bridges of Love,” which premieres on primetime TV this Monday (March 16).

Jericho or Paulo

Dubbed as a “story like no other,” “Bridges of Love” shares the tale of two brothers, Gael (to be played by Jericho Rosales) and Carlos (to be played by Paulo Avelino), who were bound by their promise to each other but separated by an unfortunate tragedy. Separated by guilt and hatred, Gael and Carlos will be bridged together by love embodied by only one woman — Mia (to be played by Maja Salvador), a vivacious club dancer who happens to be Gael’s greatest love and the woman who completed Carlos’ broken heart. Will their love for Mia be the ultimate test to Gael and Carlos’ brotherhood torn asunder in the past? In the end, will love bring them together, or will it create an irreconcilable gap that will tear them apart permanently? “Bridges of Love” is directed by Dado Lumibao, Will Fredo, and Richard Somes. It is under the Star Creatives production, the creator of recent TV hits including “Princess and I,” “Got to Believe,” “The Legal Wife,” and “Forevermore.” The upcoming series will also feature Antoinette Taus, Max Eigenmann, Maureen Mauricio, Lito Pimentel, John Manalo, Janus del Prado, William Lorenzo, Joross Gamboa, and Malou de Guzman.
